Does this help your memory?
Engelstad Modum og Kristiansand.
Er det noen som kan hjepe henne?
I am researching the surname ENGELSTAD in Kristiansand, Norway.
The earliest record I have of my ancestors using this name is my gggrandfather, Kristofer Engelstad. He was born March 10, 1844 in Skredsviken, Modum, Norway, with the name of Kristiansen, but began using the name Engelstad at some point later in his life. It is thought that his family lived at the Engelstad farm in Modum parish at some point, and this is where the name came from.
Kristofer's parents were Christian Nilsen and Karen Dorthea Christophersd.
Kristofer Kristiansen Engelstad m. Tomine Andrea Christiansd. on Nov. 22, 1867.
They had three children: Kristian Kornelius, b. 1868, Karl Emil, b. 1871, and Johan Martin, b. 1874. Johan Martin emigrated to the U.S. in 1893, traveling under the name of Martin Engelstad.
This is the name he mostly used, and he was usually called Marty. He became a Salvation Army officer and served the S.A. until he retired, whereupon he opened a bakery in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, and continued to run it for several years. He died on Mar. 3, 1967, in Quincy, MA, where he had been living with his daughter.
There are family reports that one of his brothers also emigrated, but from what I've been able to find so far, they did not travel together. This brother reportedly became a mortician, and operated a funeral home possibly somewhere in New England. I am greatly interested in making contact with descendants of this or either of Johan Martin's brothers. Does anyone here have Kristian Kornelius or Karl Emil Engelstad in their family tree?
Also, at some point in time, in our branch of the family at least, the spelling of the name was changed to Englestad. This is even noted in the records of the Salvation Army, as it apparently changed back and forth a few times. This could have also happened with other branches of the family, as well.

Some years back, I did some Qld research for one of the wife's relatives in Canada!
His name is Donald Wall who lives in Calgary Alberta Canada.
His father Leslie Leishman was born in Queensland and his father Robert Leishman was killed at Gallipoli in World War one!
His mother then married her husband's best mate from the War a Robert Wall
and her son Leslie Leishman was adopted and changed his name to Wall.
As Robert Wall was an American he took the family back to the United States after the War.
Don Wall sent me his Wall Gedcom and I have just put it into my new Brothers Keeper for
Windows and printed out a Pedigree Chart of him! I was surprised to find that on his mother's
side there were several Norwegian Ancestors!
He has done his Norwegian Research up and got his mothers side back 4 generations on the
female side and three generations on the male side.
His mother was Carmen Amunda Wick Born 17 Aug 1911 Eureka Humbolt California.
Her father was Osuf Wick Born 26 May 1888 Tvedestrand,Aust-Agder (Akershus) Norway
Married 11 Oct 1910 Eureka Humbolt California.
He married Olga Tillea Holm B:Eureka Humbotl California.
Osuf Wick's father was Lars (Wiik) Vik Born 1863 Wiik (a Farm) Norway and
married Amunda Ellingsen Born 1864 Tvedestrand,Aust- Agder, Norway.
I don't suppose that you could find the parents of the above two Ancestors Lars (Wik) Vik Born 1863
and Amunda Ellingsen his wife Born 1864 in Tvedestrand,Aust-Agder, Norway.

Hilsen, Priscilla Sorknes i Minneapolis.
