Innlegg nr. 28 (21:21 13/07-2000)
Your entry: Hi, I have just begun looking for my "Norwegian ancestors". My grandmother's father and mother came from Norway--Mandal--near the turn of the century and settled in East Boston, Massachusetts. My great-grandfather changed his name it seems each time he arrived in the US. I think he was a seaman; anyway, one name was Frederick Farstad? Frederick Fasta, and finally I think the name on my grandmother's birth certificate was Frederick Foster. I don't know my great-grandmother's name b/c she died when my grandmother was about 4 or 5 years old. They attended the Norwegian Lutheran Church on Paris Street in East Boston, MA. Help any one out there?

Your entry: I would like to find a person named Peter (maybe named Robert) Hansen, who came from Denmark (Barsmark, Lojt, Aabenraa) to the USA (Cleveland, Ohio)late 1800 (?). His parents were Niels Peter Hansen, b.June, 2nd, 1840 and Marie Moeller, b. Sept.,19th, 1852. In his letter dated Dec. 8th 1910 Mr. Hansen writes that he has got five daughters and mentions Myrtle (11 y.o.),Evelyn and Marion (9 y.o.). In another letter he states his address to be P.Robert Hanson, 7109 Wadw Park Ave. Cleveland, Ohio. Further more a sister and a brother emigrated to the USA, appr. the same period. Sister's name: Elise Hansen, b. on Nov. 7th 1853 (Denmark, Lojt), whose adrress once was: c/o Mr. C.L. Nielsen, 96 Dunham Ave, Cleveland, Ohio. Brothers name: Otto Hansen (the birthday is unknown). An address stated 2428 E63 St., Cleveland, Ohio. All traces dissapeared in connection with World War 1. Peter Hansen's connection was with my grandmother (mother's mother) named Birgitte Andersen, born Hansen, who was a sister to these three persons. I would be grateful for any kind of information or hints how to find possible members of my family in the USA. Thank you so much!

Innlegg nr. 51 (16:25 11/05-2000)
Your entry: I saw the name Hendriksen mentioned as I read through the entries at this site. My grandfather was Henrik Hendriksen, perhaps spelled Henriksen. I don't know anything much about his family as he was a Norwegian sailor and he came to Baltimore, MD, met my grandmother and stayed there. This must have been in the early 1900's. He died in the 1930's, probably 1938 and he was in his 60's. I was a very little girl at the time but I remember the man as was he loved children and I remember sitting on his lap and being read to. There were some postcards around that came from a place called Risor in Norway. He had a sister in Brooklyn, NY whose name was Anna Calder. There was another relative who I thought was a batchelor named Ragnar Johannsen who also lived in Brooklyn. I know this only through Christmas cards that came. Anna Calder kept in touch with her brother and occasionally came to visit I'm told and maybe Ragnar did too. He was called Rags. Anna had a son named John who I would guess is no longer living although I don't know that for a fact. I know that he was an adult while I was a very little child and I must have met somewhere along the way, but don't remember and I am 65 now so he would be very old if he is alive. If any of this information rings any bells for anyone who could be his family Iwould be interested i in hearing from them. Dorothy Marcum lynndot@freewwweb.com

Your entry: My Great Great Grandfather Christen Christensen sailed to Australian with his wife Anna Eriksen and other members of his family on the Lammershagen in 1872. The death certificate for my grandmother says she came from the town of Van Heart Horsen in Denmark (Spelling could be and probably is wrong) however, I have not been able to locate such a town on any map either recent or pre WW1 and WW2. I believe, as they were farmers, that this may only be a small village and that it now may be part of Germany. As this town is a vital link in researching the family history I would be most greatful if anyone could provide further information or suggest where I may start in locating it.

David Miles Australia

Innlegg nr. 80 (14:13 31/12-1999)
Your entry: My great grandfather Hans Peter (or Peder) Hansen from Langeland Denmark arrived in Australia about 1877. Oral history says he had some kind of certificate or qualification - presumably a navigator, master, bosun, or something; and that he ran away to sea at 16 years of age. The closest large international port to Langeland is logically Hanover,. a German city. And I understand German was spoken last century by Danes. We know he arrived in Gympie for the gold rush and got a little. Maryborough was probably the most convenient port at the timeas it was said to take up to 3 weeks to come overland from Brisbane. Another paradigm shift - a century and a quarter later you can travel on a freeway the same distance in 2 hours. The indexed lists of immigrants may not contain my Hans Peter. It is said he jumped ship. If so there may be a record of him with the ship or it's owner company. The person on the immigrant list is for 1877 and is very close to the right age - 23 years. We know that from his death certificate. 1930-77 years = 1853. Difference between that and 1877 is 23 or 24 years. So if he was registered with the Queensland authorities that may very well be him. Only hitch is that his eldest son born in 1881 is not registered with the Qld. Archives (prelude to Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages). For whatever reason. At present this is a tenuous possibility. I'd like to see a passenger list, and more importantly, a crew list. Can you help me with any information - at all. Happy new year. Patricia Hansen u.s.a.

Innlegg nr. 87 (00:51 07/11-1999)
Your entry: My husband and I are looking for information about his paternal great-grandfather, Peter (James) Hansen. We are not positive of the first name. He was from Denmark and immigrated to the U.S.A. around the turn of the century. He married an woman named Ina whose maiden name is unknown to the family as we believe that they were married in Denmark and do not know how to find marriage certificates for foreign localities. Peter had one son, James Winfred Hansen born in Chicago. Ina came to the U.S. when she was seven months pregnant because she wanted her child to have U.S. citizenship. When the baby was 4 months old, Peter came to America to be with his family. Within a few weeks, he died of a blow to the head. (Probably a kick from a horse). Ina quickly remarried a man with the last name Von Berg and moved to Plainfield, Indiana where she and her husband helped administrate an orphange. Although, grandpa James new his mother and these few sketchy facts about his father, he was essentially raised with the other children in the orphanage. When asked, his mother was not forthcoming with much information. She did not like Denmark and may have had a fear that James would want to visit his Danish relatives. The names of the parents of Peter Hansen are unknown to our family. He seemed to have been heavily involved in the Missionary Bands in the States during an extended visit here and probably met Ina that way. We are trying to find out what the cause of death was for Peter Hansen's father. Peter's son, James, and all three of his sons have had cancer and there is a chance that this is genetic. For my husband's sake (Peter Hansen's great-grandson), I am trying to find out how many men in the family have died of cancer and what little information that there may be about their diagnosis'. If this family story resembles anything from your geneological searches, please email me. WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!

Your entry: My father's father, or maybe grandfather, came to Minnesota in the late 1800's from Holum, Norway. I've been told that our fmily got the name "Holum" from the town, rather than from ancestry. Could anybody verify this for me? My grandparents' names are Henry and Agnes Holum, and they settled in Boyd, Minnesota. I don't know much beyond that, other than immigration (whoever) happened around the turn of the century - maybe as early as 1870. To be certain, I believe I am 3rd generation American, so I guess that means my great-grandparents came over from Norway? Please help if you can.

Your entry: What a fascinating page. I entered it because you mentioned Eidsvold. I am at a major Brick Wall with my mother's father's family. Her grandparents left Christiania in 1873 and on the police register said they were from Christiania. When they landed in Quebec they said they were from Eidsvold. The names are so common, that it is a problem . Otto Hansen, b c. 1826 and Andrea Olsen (sic), born c. March 1826. I am waiting for the entire 1865 census to get on line. In the past I have searched the entire 1865 census for Oslo, and also the census for Eidsvold, but have not been able to find them. Anyway, until I know more I am afraid the death register for Eidsvold is not helpful. But love seeing such work done. Your web page is great. Also enjoyed you picture at the helm of the sailing ship. When I was last in Norway, in 1975 we took a tour of the harbor at Oslo and I tried to imagine what it looked like when my great grandparents left there. I will be there again this summer. Judith Mason USA

Innlegg nr. 125 (19:47 23/01-1999)
Your entry: Vidar, I tried to send you email but it bounced back. Anyway the Social Security Death Index, has a Anker Johannessen, b. 20 Jan 1904 d. sept 1971. It would cost $7.00 to get a copy of the original application. It would have the parents name, to verify if its the Anker that your're looking for.

Your entry: My great grandmother, Christine Christensen, and Grandfather, Charles Larsen, were both born in the Arendal area, in a town or area called Kilvesund.
